Death of Father Pops

"What always struck me when I think of him, was his smile and his eyes that shone. Welcoming eyes that invited the confession," said Valérie Plante, the Mayor of Montreal, at a memorial night in honor of Father Emmett Johns, nicknamed Pops, who died on January 13th, 2018 at the age of 89.

"That's exactly what hundreds of kids have found in Pops' eyes, a glimmer of hope they needed when they were having a hard time or were feeling rejected."

In 1988, the priest had purchased a used motor vehicle on which he had inscribed “Le Bon Dieu dans la rue” (God in the street). He retlentlessly roamed the streets of Montreal at night to welcome the young homeless crossing his path.
