Learn moreRemembering! Is it a privilege or an obligation? Is it essential or meaningless? Memories are personal and intimate. They remind us of who we are, what we have experienced and how far we have come. Reliving a very important moment in my life. Seeing the people who shaped me in my everyday life. Seeing myself through my past. Images, voices, smells and places come back to me. As a small child, I stood before the vastness of white in the midst of a blustering snowstorm as I cleared a pathway through the snow; joyfully holding my child in my arms reminds me of the great and wonderful gift it is to be a parent. Remembering is fundamental. Remembering makes it possible to make part of my past life present, to bring it back to life, to pay homage.
Remembering, so many years. I was born on January 6, 1934, a long time ago. I remember so much, and I will make an attempt now to recall some of it. I don’t remember this one, but my family told me that when I was 2 years old, there was a great flood in Lawrence, Massachusetts and my mother, my two older sisters and I escaped through a second-floor window onto my father’s boat below and we ducked under electric and telephone wires as he rowed us to dry land. We lost everything, but we had each other and an enduring Catholic faith that helped us along.
