From a very young age, we have an ardent desire and curiosity to discover the world around us. It is stronger than us. Of course, the road is not always smooth and easy-going. The blue skies give way to clouds, thick fog and sometimes even storms. In an instant, the landmarks disappear from our view and a feeling of helplessness invades us.

In our increasingly digital and electronic world, Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and electronic mapping applications on our computers and cellphones make it ever simpler to get turn-by-turn directions to our destinations whenever we travel. As long as we have the correct address for the destination, these systems have proven to be fairly accurate. However, there are always times in our travels, in our trips here and there and in our life in general, when it helps to have a navigator on board who knows the best and most direct route to take in order to arrive safe and sound at our destination. An experienced navigator remains undaunted and is a great resource to have along when we encounter road closures, traffic, and even occasional accidents or obstacles on our route. For example, some of my confrères here in our Redemptorist community have spent significant time living and serving in the local region. These confrères are also my best navigators. They know many shortcuts and lots of back ways to get from Point A to Point B, many of which I would not think of taking to get around the area in which I presently live. So, their guidance and presence provide a source of valuable information and gentle reassurance for me as I become increasingly familiar with the region myself. It also serves to inform my own future route choices.
